Delta flight makes emergency landing at Myrtle Beach airport after ‘smell’ in flight deck, airline says

by: Caleb McCusker

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — A Delta Air Lines flight from New York’s LaGuardia Airport made an emergency landing at Myrtle Beach International Airport late Wednesday morning after its crew reported a “smell” in the flight deck, officials said.

Delta Flight 1988 reported the issue at about 11:30 a.m., according to officials. As a precaution, the airport’s emergency response units were dispatched to their designated staging areas.

The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, landed safely and went to its assigned terminal gate, officials said. After an initial inspection, no visible smoke was observed, and the 87 passengers and six crew members exited normally.

“Due to a smell in the flight deck, emergency was declared for priority handling with Air Traffic Control, and the flight landed safely without incident,” a Delta spokesperson said. “The flight was met by emergency personnel.”

The spokesperson also said there were no reports of customers or cabin crew experiencing the smell and no reports of medical attention needed for the crew or customers. The flight crew donned oxygen masks in the flight deck, but the oxygen masks in the cabin did not deploy for the crew or customers.

Delta released a statement following the incident, saying the safety of its passengers and crew is its top priority.

“Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people, and that’s why our flight crew followed procedures to land safely at Myrtle Beach,” the airline said. “We thank our customers for their understanding.”

The aircraft underwent further evaluation by maintenance teams.

Narrative:
VASP flight 012, a NAMC YS-11, overran into Guanabara Bay during takeoff from Rio de Janeiro-Santos Dumont Airport, Brazil, killing 8 occupants; 57 survived the accident.

A temporary loss of power occurred 8 knots before the V1 speed, followed by an increase of the TGT (Turbine Gas Temperature) to the maximum. The takeoff was aborted immediately.
Because braking action seemed poor, the emergency brakes were activated. Brakes were only effective on the right main gear, so the pilot ultimately retracted the gear when it seemed an overrun was imminent. The YS-11 continued and slid into Guanabara Bay.
