Small plane makes safe emergency landing in rural Valley Springs
By Dakota News Now staff
VALLEY SPRINGS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - A
small plane made an emergency landing in a harvested field near the South Dakota-Minnesota border on Wednesday afternoon.
Authorities were called out to 488th Avenue and 265th Street near Valley Springs around 12:30 p.m. after air traffic control lost contact with the pilot.
According to the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office, the pilot was flying from Red Wing, Minnesota, to Tea and ran out of fuel.
The single-occupant plane touched down safely, avoiding what could have been a serious accident.
'Means everything': Fairdale community buys pizza for firefighters after deadly UPS plane crash

LOUISVILLE, Ky. —
The pain from last week’s tragic UPS plane crash
has reached every corner of Louisville, including Fairdale.
At Derby City Pizza, the community came together in a simple but powerful way to say thank you to their first responders.
“Welcome to Derby City Pizza Fairdale,” said longtime manager Jennifer Reece, who has worked at the restaurant for eight years and knows many of her customers by name.
“It’s a family atmosphere,” she said.
And when tragedy struck Louisville, that family spirit extended to the Fairdale Fire Department, one of the first agencies to respond to the devastating crash.
“We was one of the first ones there,” assistant fire chief Stephen Cahill said.
The department has continued to return to the crash site in the days since.
“Nobody can ever prepare you for an airplane crash. No matter how much you try. You think you’re ready for it. So sometimes it takes, it takes the community and it takes just everybody to come together and do what we can to try and help,” he said.
That’s exactly what this community did, using something as simple as pizza to show support.
“We sent some pizzas over to the fire department just to help them out during the crisis,” Reece said. “And on that same day, we had several customers coming in and they also were buying food for the fire department.”
For firefighters still processing everything that happened, that gesture meant a lot.
“So it’s, it’s been a whirlwind for sure. Emotions and anxiety and everything,” said Cahill, “It was nice. It was a day especially to have a hot meal after, you know, you’ve used all your energy. Just to be able to sit down and kind of gather your thoughts and all that is really, really nice.”
To them, a small act of kindness went a long way.
“Buying pizza, it can be small. It may seem small to some people, but it means everything for these guys as well,” a firefighter said. “Being able to come home and not have to worry about eating or making food or anything like that, having pizza here for them, being able to just sit down and eat, gather your thoughts, and be ready for the next calls, it’s truly amazing and a blessing for sure.”
In Fairdale, a few slices of pizza became a reminder of what a community looks like in the face of heartbreak.
